A Markov process is a stochastic process that satisfies the Markov property: given the present state, the future state is conditionally independent of the past states. This is mathematically described as:

\[ P(X_{n+1} = x | X_n = x_n, X_{n-1} = x_{n-1}, \ldots, X_0 = x_0) = P(X_{n+1} = x | X_n = x_n) \]

where \(X_n\) represents the state of the system at the \(n\)-th step.

Markov processes can be categorized based on their state space and time parameter. When the state space is discrete and the time parameter is also discrete, we refer to it as a Discrete-Time Markov Chain (DTMC). If the time parameter is continuous, it is called a Continuous-Time Markov Chain (CTMC). When the state space is continuous, such processes are often associated with stochastic differential equations.

Key concepts within Markov processes include transition matrices, stationary distributions, and ergodicity:

  • Transition Matrix (Discrete-Time): In a DTMC, the process is often represented by a transition matrix \(P\). Each element \(P_{ij}\) of this matrix corresponds to the probability of transitioning from state \(i\) to state \(j\) in one time step.

  • Stationary Distribution: A stationary distribution \( \pi \) is a probability distribution that remains invariant as the system evolves. For a discrete-time Markov chain, it can be found as a solution to the equation \(\pi P = \pi\), where \(\pi\) is a row vector.

  • Ergodicity: A Markov process is ergodic if it is irreducible (every state can eventually be reached from any other state) and aperiodic (the system does not cycle regularly). In such processes, long-term behavior does not depend on the initial state, and the system converges to its stationary distribution.

Markov processes are widely used across various domains, such as physics (to model particle movement), finance (for stock price modeling), biology (population growth models), and computer science (algorithmic random walks and queuing theory). Simulation methods for Markov processes, such as the Monte Carlo simulation, make it possible to analyze systems that are analytically intractable, thereby providing valuable insights into system behavior over time.
