  2. Irrevocability: Once a choice is made, it cannot be undone, ensuring that the algorithm does not revisit the same decision multiple times.
  3. Optimal Substructure: Many problems solved by greedy algorithms have the property that optimal solutions to subproblems can be combined to form an optimal solution to the overall problem.

Formal Definition and Common Structure:

A greedy algorithm often follows this general structure:
1. Initialization: Setting up the initial conditions or state of the problem.
2. Selection: Picking the best possible choice based on the current state.
3. Feasibility Check: Verifying whether the selected choice maintains the feasibility of a solution.
4. Solution Check: Determining whether the current state constitutes a complete solution to the problem.
5. Update: Transitioning to a new state based on the choice made.

Mathematically, if we consider a problem with a set of elements \( E \) and an objective function \( f \), a greedy algorithm selects an element \( e \) from \( E \) that maximizes (or minimizes) \( f(e) \). Each choice made reduces the problem’s overall size until it reaches a base case that can be easily solved.

Applications:

Greedy algorithms are widely used in various domains within and beyond computer science. Some well-known applications include:
- Huffman Coding: An algorithm used in data compression which constructs an optimal prefix code that minimizes the average length of the encoded message.
- Prim’s and Kruskal’s Algorithms: These greedy algorithms are used for finding the Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) of a graph, ensuring that the total weight of the spanning tree is minimized.
- Dijkstra’s Algorithm: Used for finding the shortest paths from a source vertex to all other vertices in a weighted graph with non-negative edge weights.

Example: The Knapsack Problem (Fractional)

The fractional knapsack problem is a classic example of a problem that can be efficiently solved using a greedy algorithm. Given a set of items, each with a weight \( w_i \) and a value \( v_i \), and a knapsack with capacity \( W \), the goal is to maximize the total value in the knapsack while allowing the division of items.

The greedy solution involves calculating the value-to-weight ratio \( \frac{v_i}{w_i} \) for each item and sorting the items in non-increasing order of this ratio. The algorithm then fills the knapsack by taking as much as possible of the item with the highest ratio until the capacity is full.

Limitations:

While greedy algorithms are powerful and efficient, they do not guarantee an optimal solution for all problems. For instance, the 0/1 knapsack problem, which does not allow item division, can be solved more effectively using dynamic programming instead of a greedy approach. Additionally, greedy algorithms’ success is highly dependent on the nature of the problem, particularly on whether the local choices made lead to a globally optimal solution.
