    • P (Polynomial Time): The set of decision problems that can be solved by a deterministic Turing machine in polynomial time. Formally, \( P = \{ L \mid \exists \text{ a deterministic Turing machine M such that M solves L in polynomial time} \} \).
    • NP (Nondeterministic Polynomial Time): The set of decision problems that can be solved by a nondeterministic Turing machine in polynomial time. Alternatively, these are problems for which a given solution can be verified in polynomial time. Formally, \( NP = \{ L \mid \exists \text{ a nondeterministic Turing machine M such that M verifies solutions for L in polynomial time} \} \).

  2. The P vs NP Problem:
    One of the most famous and central open problems in Complexity Theory is the P vs NP question, which asks whether every problem in NP can also be solved in polynomial time (i.e., whether \( P = NP \)). This question has profound implications for fields such as cryptography, algorithm design, and artificial intelligence.

  3. Reduction and Completeness:
    To understand the relative difficulty of problems, Complexity Theory uses the concepts of reductions. A problem \( A \) is said to be reducible to problem \( B \) (written as \( A \leq_p B \)) if an efficient algorithm for \( B \) can be used to solve \( A \). A problem is NP-complete if it is in NP and every problem in NP is polynomial-time reducible to it. NP-complete problems are considered among the hardest problems in NP.

  4. Space Complexity:
    Similar to temporal complexity, space complexity concerns the amount of memory space required to solve a problem. Important space complexity classes include:

    • L (Logarithmic Space): The set of decision problems that can be solved by a deterministic Turing machine using logarithmic space.
    • PSPACE: The set of decision problems that can be solved by a deterministic Turing machine using polynomial space.

Mathematical Details:

The complexity of an algorithm is often represented in Big O notation, which describes the upper bound of the algorithm’s growth rate. For example, an algorithm that runs in polynomial time might be expressed as \( O(n^k) \), where \( n \) is the size of the input and \( k \) is a constant.

In summary, Complexity Theory is a critical domain within the Theory of Computation, extensively used to not only classify problems based on their computational requirements but also to deepen our understanding of the limits of what can be feasibly computed.
