The structure of sentences is often depicted using tree diagrams, which illustrate the hierarchical nature of syntactic constituents and their relationships.

One fundamental aspect of generative grammar is the distinction between deep structure and surface structure. Deep structure pertains to the abstract, underlying syntactic organization of a sentence, while surface structure corresponds to the actual linear arrangement of words as spoken or written. Transformational rules connect these two levels, allowing for movement and modification of elements within a sentence. For example, consider the sentence pair:

  2. The mouse is chased by the cat.

Both sentences share a common deep structure but are realized with different surface structures through the application of transformations such as passive construction.

Generative grammar also posits universal grammar, a set of structural principles inherent to all human languages. These principles are believed to be biologically endowed, guiding the acquisition and use of language across diverse linguistic environments. An example of such principles might include the formation of questions or relative clauses, which exhibit similar patterns despite the surface diversity of the world’s languages.

The formal notation often used in generative grammar is based on phrase structure rules and transformations. For instance, a simple phrase structure rule can be represented as:
