Linear Transformations

  1. Additivity (or Superposition Principle):

    T(\mathbf{u} + \mathbf{v}) = T(\mathbf{u}) + T(\mathbf{v})
    \]

  2. Homogeneity (or Scalar Multiplication):
    \[
    T(c\mathbf{u}) = cT(\mathbf{u})
    \]

Representation of Linear Transformations

  1. Identity Transformation: The identity transformation \( I \) on a vector space \( V \) maps every vector to itself. In matrix form, this is represented by the identity matrix \( I \), where \( I\mathbf{x} = \mathbf{x} \) for all \( \mathbf{x} \in V \).

  2. Rotation: A rotation in the plane can be represented by a matrix that multiplies a vector to produce its rotated version. For example, a rotation by an angle \( \theta \) counterclockwise in the plane is given by:

Properties and Theorems

Linear transformations have several important properties and are subject to various theorems:

  • Kernel and Image: The kernel (or null space) of a linear transformation \( T: V \to W \) is the set of all vectors in \( V \) that map to the zero vector in \( W \). The image (or range) is the set of all vectors in \( W \) that are images of vectors in \( V \).

  • Rank-Nullity Theorem: This theorem relates the dimensions of the kernel and image of a linear transformation. For a linear transformation \( T: V \to W \) where \( V \) is finite-dimensional:

  • Invertibility: A linear transformation is invertible if there exists another linear transformation that acts as its inverse. This is equivalent to the transformation matrix being nonsingular (having a non-zero determinant).
